For sure your skin won’t look as good as it did when you were younger but there is much you can do help yourself look good for your age.

A few simple changes to your lifestyle and skincare routine can slow down the signs of aging without the need for expensive cosmetic procedures or costly ‘miracle’ lotions and potions.

What Happens To Your Skin Over 50?

One of the first places to deteriorate throughout our 50s is the delicate skin of the eye area. The eyelids may become hooded and more wrinkled showing the effects of the breakdown of the skin’s elasticity.

Slackness of the skin is also a common problem in this age group especially if you have dieted in the past. This happens because the skin cannot regain its elasticity as easily in between periods or rapid weight loss or rapid weight gain.

If you have avoided exercise in the past this will also begin to show up on your skin now and you may experience a loss of tone to your muscles. Toned muscles help to keep skin looking firmer as muscles ‘plump up’ the skin.

In your 50s skin also becomes more dehydrated and you may be prone to very dry or flaky skin. This is because collagen and elastin weaken more so with age and are no longer able to support the skin’s cells in the way they could when you were younger.

Areas of pigmentation also begin to show up in your 50s. You may notice the appearance of age spots, patches of skin where the cells produce pigment in the absence of the sun. They commonly appear on the face, arms and backs of the hands.

Finally skin pores may increase in size throughout your 50s as your skin loosens and the opening of pores becomes more obvious.

How You Can Help Your Skin

All is not lost however and a good skincare routine and some simple lifestyle changes can make all the difference to your skin

The following are some helpful skincare tips for men and women aged 50-60.

  1. Exercise

Nothing ages your body faster than a lack of exercise. Without exercise the body becomes stiff and inflexible and poor muscle tone affects the appearance of your skin aggravating skin slackness.

The physical health benefits of exercise are well known. In addition to improving your overall health, exercise can also help to improve the appearance of your skin tone and revitalize your complexion.

People who exercise generally have a brighter complexion because circulation increases and the skin cells are better able to renew themselves.

Sallow skin after 50 often occurs because of sluggish circulation and an overload of bodily toxins. Exercise makes us breathe more deeply giving the circulation a boost, which in turn facilitates the effective transportation of oxygen and vital nutrients to all parts of the body.

This helps body and skin cells to renew themselves faster and what’s more exercise tones the muscles. Toned muscles are able to support the skin better giving your body a better and firmer looking appearance.

  1. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!

moisturizerMaintaining your skins moisture levels from the outside is vital throughout your 50s as skin can become very dry at this time.

Dry skin can make wrinkles appear deeper and give the complexion a dull and sallow tone.

Keeping your skin moist is more important than ever and you might want to consider using extra-nourishing facemasks or night creams from your early 50s onwards.

Moisturize morning and night to keep your skin hydrated and minimize the appearance of fine lines on your face. And don’t forget your neck – this area needs moisture too.

Women may want to use moisturizing make-up products such as extra-moist foundations or tinted moisturizers in place of their usual foundations. Foundation shows up dry patches and flaking so choosing moisturizing make-up is a good alternative as it works on your skin whilst also making you look and feel better.

  1. Improve Your Digestion

Poor digestion can be a contributor to dry and dull looking skin. Make sure you are getting enough fiber by eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, brown rice and pasta and other whole grains.

Drinking 6 – 8 glasses of water per day can also provide a boost to your digestive system preventing sluggishness. Water has the added bonus of helping to keep the skin adequately hydrated.

Hydrated skin will look plumper and moist improving facial tone and the appearance of your complexion.

  1. Exfoliate

Exfoliating treatments are ‘grainy’ creams and cleansers that remove the dead skin cells that form on the surface of your skin, you can buy them or make your own by blending natural ingredients such as brown sugar or oats with pure, natural nut and seed oils to reproduce the ‘grainy’ effect.

Exfoliating helps to combat dull looking skin as it exposes the new skin cells that lie beneath the dead skin. This can help you to maintain a youthful glow!

Exfoliated skin is also less likely to have dry patches and therefore improves the application and look of face make-up. Avoid harsh exfoliators as these can aggravate the skin and cause redness.

  1. Take a High Quality Vitamin Supplement

Make sure you are getting your daily dose of all those essential skin-friendly vitamins and minerals. Try to get as much nutrition as you can from your diet but a vitamin supplement that contains Vitamins A, C and E can really provide a helpful boost for your skin.

Vitamin A helps to counteract dry and flaky skin and encourages the production of collagen.

Vitamin C is essential for healthy skin as it helps with the growth and repair of all the tissues in the body. Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant helping to protect the skin from environmental damage and the aging process.

Vitamin E is effective in helping to maintain the skin’s moisture levels.
